This digital download contains a 40-page PDF “textbook” (+ a bonus head cap pattern): the ultimate moving-jaw tutorial, meant for both professionals and new makers!

People often asked us how to install the moving jaw. Because, even if they purchased an already hinged d-i-y kit (i.e., a cut-and-hinged resin mask with all accessories that you can find in this shop), they realized that finishing the mask isn‘t that easy, and often faced difficulties making the jaw mechanism work properly. Because when adding straps, springs, chinrests, and other contraptions to the mask, it is important to heed both the hinge placement and the shape and weight of the mask. If the mechanism isn‘t installed properly, the jaw may be too hard to open, open too little, or not open at all. It can slip from your chin or move the whole mask forward over your forehead. You may need to apply too strong force to open the jaw, making wearing the mask too tiring, or you may want to make a mask that will be sold but the mechanism works only for a certain head size.

This tutorial will explain how to install all contraptions to the mask so that the mechanism works, but not just that; It aims to explore the general theory of mask hinging, guiding you through the hinging of different types of masks and finding the optimal solution for just the mask you purchased or are planning to use.

Moreover, you may find this tutorial useful if you ever decide to build your own model with a hinged jaw, be it using digital 3D modeling or the traditional clay way. After reading this tutorial, you should know exactly where to place the pivot point of your moving jaw to get the best and smoothest results!

Here is the Table of Contents – all this can be found in the tutorial:

Chapter 1. The general principles of the moving jaw mechanism..........2
This chapter explains the mechanics of moving jaws and describes the optimal placement of the joint (the pivot point). It is recommended for professional makers and makers that are making their own hard-shelled bases. If you are just using a base that you got from another maker (and you aren't really interested in all the theory), feel free to skip to chapter two.
1.1 Finding the optimal hinge position..........2
1.2 Two mechanisms of the moving jaw..........7
1.3 Working with the mask‘s weight: Explanation of the lever principle..........9
1.4 Coping with the limitations of the masks..........15

Chapter 2. Installation of the moving jaw mechanism..........17
In this chapter, we will describe two methods of the moving jaw installations: one that uses a spring (or elastic band) to keep the jaw closed, one that is left without it (springless method), and we will show you what to add (and where to place it) to your mask to make the moving jaw work (with either mechanism).
2.1 Comparison of the two mechanisms..........17
2.2 The springed mechanism..........19
2.3 The springless mechanism..........24

Chapter 3. Straps and padding..........28
In this chapter, you will learn how to install the straps and padding inside the mask so you can attach it to your head. There is also pattern for a foam “head cap” that can be glued inside your mask to ensure nice and comfortable transition between the hard-shelled mask front and the sewn backside of the mask.
3.1 Size-adjustable straps..........28
3.2 upper mask padding and foam „cap“..........34
3.3 Final touches..........38
+ bonus: Foam cap pattern
